Positives in Photography

Steve Carty is one of the many photographers I follow on Twitter. His use of light is amazing. He’s not only a dope photographer, but he’s a husband and father. I respect his craft, but I especially respect him as a man of his word. Carty was gracious enough to send me a copy of his book, Positives, and he was even kind enough leave a special message.

Receiving a word of encouragement from a fellow photographer is always priceless. It’s a boost of energy, inspiration. It’s as if you’re finally receiving the reassurance that you’ve been searching for. There is a possibility that you’ll someday become the person your mentor helped you to become.

Some may believe photographers are not willing to help others become masters of their craft. The photography community is just like a family. We’re close knit and we take care of each other. Today’s photographers are looking for someone to take them under their wing. But what I’ve learned is that photography is not an easy profession. I give caution to those who only see the finished product and believe Photoshop is our daily outlet of expression. Though editing may be a portion of it, learning and practicing is the best option. There is a special craft in this field. And I ask everyone to respect it.

There are many positives in photography. It’s almost as if it’s a secret society that once you’re initiated, you’re branded for life. I love the life I live. I’m able to give back to an over saturated field of art that many try to understand. It takes special people to realize that they’re artists. And Carty, you did that for me. Thanks for the book and see you at the top.
